Situated near the District of Sirohi, Mount Abu is the sole hill station in the state of Rajasthan. It nestles in the Aravalli range at the height of about 1,210 meters above the sea level. The highest point of Mount Abu is ‘Guru Shikhar’ that measures a height of 1,720 meters above the sea level. This is an ideal place to beat the heat in the summers, especially for the residents of the desert state. But, in the Hindu mythology also, this place is said to be the site where Vashistha, the famous Hindu sage, retired. There are a lot of interesting places to visit here.
Dilwara Jain Temples – beauty in prayers
Situated about 2 kilometres from Mount Abu, Dilwara Jain Temples belong to as early as the 11th and 13th century. What makes it a must-visit is its superb use of marble in the temple architecture. The spotless stone layout and the ornamental carvings make it a beautiful pilgrimage spot. The entire complex of these templeshouses 5 temples, all of which are unique to Jainism. The intricate engravings on its ceilings and the various scenes from the Hindu and Jain mythology presented through the carved marble sculptures will surely leave you in awe.
Nakki Lake -
This is a sacred and ancient lake. The place is a good spot for a picnic with friends and family alike. The many trek spots nearby are great for some adventure. You will also enjoy boating at this lake. The popularity of this lake is also linked to Mahatma Gandhi, whose ashes were immersed here. Nearby is also the Gandhi Ghat. There is an abundance of hotels, eateries, and restaurants located near the lake. The fountains here further add to the natural beauty of the lake.
This is the highest point here, and also, in the entire Aravalli mountain range. This is an ideal place to get a beautiful view of the entire region, and also, here you will find thetemple dedicated to Guru Dattatreya.It is advisable to carry your own food here as you may not find many eateries. The place is, basically, great for its extremely scenic views and the temples that are flocked by Hindu pilgrims.
Shopping in Mount Abu
Mount Abu will offer you a good shopping experience on your visit. The colourful markets are full of brilliant authentic handicrafts of Rajasthan plus Gujarat as well. The main items to buy from the markets here include the famous bangles, Kota sarees, linen in Sanganeri print, quilts, and other items made of marble, sandalwood and sandstone. So, when here, do not forget to buy souvenirs for your friends and family back home.
Best time to visit
The ideal time to visit any hill station would, of course, be the summers. But if you can fight the wintry chills, the winters too would be fine here. The best time would be between November and August.
